If it's their only savings, it's a bad idea, obviously. But they may have £200k of investments, in which case a grand in a speculative investment like this is just a bit of fun money.

I agree with the above. It's an extremely concentrated fund in a sector that's risen so quickly that people are questioning whether it's a bubble or if it can last.

Jumping in now, hindsight will only tell if it was entering at the top or if it would rise further. So we can't answer the good decision question based on hindsight as we don't have that yet. Therefore it's only a good decision or not based on circumstances, which we don't know. I think most would suggest that it's not a good fit for many circumstances - however speculating with some fun money that you don't mind losing negates most of those concerns.

Someone i work with has put about 1k in this fund without really knowing much about it or investing. Does anyone have or have ever invested in to this got any advice whether this was a bad idea?
You really can't tell anything from the information you've given. £1k into a particular high risk fund might be no issue at all if they have a £100k portfolio and this is just a tiny amount of it. If the only investment they have is this £1k and no emergency fund then that's a different situation.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
