Why did my smart phone lock up?

Hi all. haven't posted on here for a few years now, but here's a question for mobile phone experts, probably about half my age. What would be the cause of my samsung smart phone locking up? when I turned it on, swipe the screen as normal, and it would come up with a key pad asking me for passwrd. I know the password, and it would not accept it. so took it to a phone shop earlier today, and asked the guy there what would be the cause, but all he was interested in was fixing it and taking my £20.00. any way its fixed now. so any suggestions as to the cause of this appreciated, and also what to do if it happens again? thanks.

What did your phone person say, when he fixed it for you?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

HE Said maybe the settings had changed, but he couldn't be sure. he was quick enough to take my £20. though. I'm just curious as to why it happened. never done it before. but its all up n running now that I've reinstalled google, my bank account, and every thing else.

Sounds like he just did a factory reset via recovery mode if all your data and apps were wiped. This just pressing some buttons in the right order and anyone can do. Easy £20 for 30 seconds of work.

It could be one of many reasons as to why it had an issue, an OS or app update for example.

Did he just turn it off and then back on again?

I think not, because as with anything that goes wrong, I tried the old turn it off, leave it a few minutes turn it back on. It didnt work.

It's something like, press and hold the power and volume up buttons at the same time for a few seconds to get it to reset.
