Yes, but you would be wasting validity on it if you are planning to go again next year or the year afterwards.   But still do it a couple of months before just in case you mess up and/or you have to apply for an actual visa.

Unless the passport expiry date is less than 2 years as an ESTA expires with the passport. So if there is less than 2 years on the passport doing it now or in the month where it has 2 years left will not mean any loss in ESTA duration but give peace of mind it is done.
