Joint accounts saving interest

Hi,
How would like to know if hmrc are notified that an account is joint rather than have a single nominee.
In the last few months I have opened some accounts with my spouse and I wonder if the numbers are added up from each individual self assessment at hmrc's end or if it would be better to notify them separately that the interest is halved because of a joint account.

The default position is that the income is split equally between the named account holders. HMRC will receive information that the account is joint and details of both account holders.

DH sends a letter and I do SA - just tot up how much our individual savings is ie half the joint + our own and tell HMRC - we don't tell them what each account is, just the total1
