Not so Smart Meter
Why is it that British Gas send me monthly electricity bills with an increasing power usage reading when I have not been at the property for many months and the power is off at the master switch. Is this just a British Gas thing or are all smart meters scamming.

Is it power usage or standing charge? Are you local to see what the meter actually reads between two points in time?
What kind of usage is it suggesting you're using?0 -

It's not a British Gas thing, nor is it part of a nationwide smart meter scam. When was the last time you were at the property and did a reading? If it was a long time ago, the answer seems pretty simple. Go and take an actual reading, submit it and any necessary reconciliation will take place. If you're correct, that the consumption bills have increased (as opposed to the standing charge element of the bill), then they're either working off estimates, your power isn't actually turned off, or your meter is not reflecting use at your property - is it in a block of flats, by any chance? There are instances where meters are labelled to the wrong flats.
Edited to add: How long has the power been entirely off? Could the battery in the smart meter have expired, and your billing is estimated?0 -
Checked for squatters?
But more likely, billing has been estimated rather than using actual kwh usage. Have you checked whether the smart meter is sending readings to BG?0 -
How are BG supposed to know that ?Tom__D said:Why is it that British Gas send me monthly electricity bills with an increasing power usage reading when I have not been at the property for many months and the power is off at the master switch.
Just read the meter and give it to BGNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
