A friend has asked me to help find some information. She is aware of a man in a care home with Ataxia. His daughter is due to graduate later this year and it would be wonderful if he could be there. However, he will need nursing staff to travel with him and it is 100s of miles. Any ideas how to fund staff costs, petrol etc. The care home has a vehicle.
Thanks in advance,Lisa

The usual answer is to get a charity to take care of the costs but the problem will be which charity.  If he has/had any industry ties or a union they might be willing to help, also organisations like Lions Club, Masons etc, or something associated with whatever aliment he has - might be Age UK, MacMillan etc.

Have you asked the care home?  They likely have been through similar before.

Has he asked the care home? It does depend on any staff who are willing to accompany him plus the cost of cover.
What money does he have himself?

I'd definitely start by asking the care home: they will know what sort of help would be needed while he's away from the home, how long a journey he could undertake in one stretch (an overnight stay might be needed, possibly in both directions) etc.

However, I'd also suggest contacting the Student Union to ask if there are any grants which might be applied for to help him get there.

The other sensible place to contact is the office which deals with graduations. Things are usually similar from one year to the next, so at what time of day would her degree expect to graduate? That again may inform whether or not an overnight stay will be needed. And what adjustments would be needed for him to attend: there will be space, but it will need to be booked early.

Finally, I know this is not at all the same, but it is highly likely that the ceremony will be live-streamed, so that he can at least watch and be thinking of her at the 'right' time.
