Airport duty free - attractive prices

I've just discovered that World Duty Free UK shops offer good deals if you reserve online ahead for collection - and you can pay when picking up your order.
Snared 1 litre of Tanqueray Gin for upcoming trip - £15.59, plus 10% discount for using the click and collect procedure = £14.03 bottom line price.
Jet2 want £21 onboard.
Here's the link for MAN, should be easy enough to locate your nearest airport.

Have "on board prices" ever been any good? Duty free in the airport (in the UK anyway) has always been much better.

A good price for Tanqueray but not a gin I'd drink out of choice, maybe 10 at a push, unfortunately their pricing on my preferences are not materially cheaper than else where despite being duty free.

Duty free looks good value for high volume lower margin spirits, but 'duty free' doesn't mean a price which reflects removal of all duty.

On whisky duty is charged at £22 per 70cl, exc VAT, so about £26 per bottle.

    From that link.

Glengoyne 12 year old 'duty free' £46.  UK Online with duty paid £40.

Johnnie Walker Double Black £42.  UK online with duty paid £35.
  • So, how much of that £14.03 for the litre of gin is duty ?

    Surely £22 per 70cl of pure alcohol, i.e. about £8.86 for a 70cl bottle at 40% ABV?

    £31.64 x 40% (if that's the ABV of the gin) = £12.66.

I follow the 40% ABV calculation - didn't realise the £31.64 was a set price by HMRC for that level of spirit.
    Thanks for that.

You may also be able to increase your saving by joining the Red by Dufry loyalty scheme.  Order via the App or show the QR code on the App at the DF store for further savings.

Thanks - I spotted that app.
I doubt we would buy enough annually to benefit from the discount.
Presumably it can't be used in addition to the 10% off order in advance deal  - only for in person purchases on the day of travel ?
Couldn't see any reference to that extra possibilty.
  • Update - I checked the RED by Dufry terms and conditions.
Discount is not cumulative with other promotions and benefits - therefore it's a better deal to order in advance for collection and receive the 10% discount rather than purchase on the day of travel producing the app for 5% off.
Even their top grade status of 10% off simply matches the click and collect option.
Really only worth having for impulse purchases from UK airports - but perhaps useful for return flights assuming the World Duty Free operate the DF shop there.

£15.59 seems a lot. We use T5 at LHR and it's £13.99 for Tanqueray for 1L; £10.99 for Gordons.

We ordered some Gordons on the way back from Iceland on BA (you need to do it the day before, depending on the flight) and they come and deliver it to you in your seat. And it was the 47% stuff. £10.99 is a steal in my book.

    That can't be correct ?
Tesco currently asking £15 (clubcard price) for a 70cl bottle of The Famous Grouse.
Eskbanker's figures are correct IMO - which would make duty on a regular size (as brand above) of 37.5 ABV whisky £8.30.
