Carpet supplied didn't fit

Recently bought carpet for my stairs and landing.
The company sent someone out to 'double check' my measurements. He said they were spot on.
Fast forward to today ..the fitter tells me the landing section isn't wide enough by about 10-15cms (where it should go into a recessed doorway). He's going to seam a piece in but I'm annoyed as the carpet wasn't cheap. If it was my mistake I'd have to suck it up but surely the estimator should have realized?

What would you expect in this situation in terms of resolution? I've not seen the finished seamed part but it's the bathroom doorway so a high traffic area, I'm concerned over time it'll come unstuck or the join will show. And there shouldn't have been a join in the first place!

Have you spoken to the company involved?

If it was me I'd have asked the fitter to stop until a property fitted piece can be used, by allowing him to continue you've sort of agreed to this.

  • Yes the company have just called me, they've given me a choice that either I can accept the offcut being stuck in, or they can replace the whole landing.
However the issue is that the landing is over 4m wide, and this carpet only comes in 4m widths. So if I want the landing replaced it'll be laid crossways rather than in the same direction as the stair carpet (if that makes sense).
  • Just to add I've said I wanted to have a think about the options and they've said to contact them by the end of the week.

Seems to me the carpet company should have advised you this could be a problem when you chose the carpet,  they should have then given you the option to pick a different carpet that would look OK if laid in a different direction to the stairs.  If it was me I would ask them to replace the whole lot with a more suitable option

But would that not have been the case even if the estimator had got the measurements correct originally ?

Or are you suggesting that if you had known that you would have chosen a different carpet  that came in a wider width(or that the stair carpet could have been laid in a different direction) ?

Yes the landing would always have been too wide, but if the estimator has spotted it then I could either have got them to lay all the carpet in the same direction, or more likely picked one in a 5m width.

I don't think I want the offcut stuck in (I'm concerned it'll wear or come loose) but I don't know if having the landing carpet facing sideways in effect will be  noticeable or look wrong, even though it's a plain carpet.

Which I guess then (playing devils advocate) leads to the question that if the estimator said that your measurements were 'spot on' and so you presumably had measured the width as being over 4m, why did you select a carpet that only came in a 4m width - or were you not made aware of that when you ordered ?

Did you not measure to the widest point- the recessed doorway?
  • I'm not sure why I didn't notice the measurement was over 4m. My landing is an odd sort of shape so I'd measured it in sections. I don't know that I'd realized it was over 4m at the widest part but the estimator should have.

The fitter has now left. I'll add some photos of the join he's done which doesn't look great but is less wide than I thought, it's only about 10cm. He's also scraped a few bits of paintwork which is irritating as it's all only been done within the last week.
