It's a normal and integral part of a carpet fitter's job to seam carpets together (to a satisfactory standard of course).

Many of his commissions for hotels, restaurants, etc. will involve extensive seams. It's what he does. They are not invisible but once a carpet has bedded in, properly made seams can be hard to spot.

If you had said,'I want the seam here' and without discussion he had placed it there you might have had a case.

Yeah, that needs re-doing, it's immediately obvious there's a join and will almost certainly lift at some point.

The paintwork is just a simple case of touching-in.  Not the end of the world, and always a possible consequence of doing the painting first (which is logical, of course).  To be honest, the woodwork has clearly had loads of layers of paint daubed on it over time, it's not pristine as it is.  Just get a small paintbrush and touch in the scrapes, with a bit of filler beforehand if needed.
  • Id stripped all the woodwork right down, sanded, primed and then it's had 2 coats of gloss. Whilst it might not meet professional decorator standards it looked fine this morning.

The massive crack in the skirting board wasn't there before and I have no idea how to repair that.

Fill, sand, fill, sand, paint.  It will be invisible.
  • I don't think it can be filled, Im not sure if you can see from the photo but it's like he's knocked a chunk out of it and shoved it back, it's not quite laying flat to the rest of the skirting board but I can't move it.
I've now also noticed the landing carpet - as well as having the seam in - seems to be loose/ bumpy, it's not lying flat which I would expect - it's as though it needs stretching into place.

  • Sorry just to say I appreciate I may seem a bit over dramatic about all this, I have ADHD so probably react a bit differently to the norm. I've been hyper focused on getting this decorating done and carpet laid and achieving a perfectly finished outcome and now all I can see are imperfections.

I wouldn't be happy with any of that.  Can't see who they couldn't have laid it crossways as it's a plain carpet.

I'd say trying to fit a 4mtr carpet onto a landing it is almost enevitable that at some point the fitter is going to scrape the paintwork. Just touch it up. The gash looks like the fitter knocked his bolster into the woodwork. It will fill, sand and paint, not a massive issue. Never seen it done before though!

The joint I'd live with if the alternative was a big jump in price. If it's heat seamed they are decent joints. You're focusing on this because you know its there. No one else would ever notice.
Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.
  • Given they are will to redo the landing you might find they'll offer you a few quid to accept the join.

Personally I'd have the landing redone :)

Shame about the paint but moving the carpet about is probably tricky, damage to skirting not really acceptable, but they'll likely just send someone to touch it up as quick as possible so you'll probably end up with a better finish if you do so yourself.
