trying to find link to hmrc to get utr number

Hello.... absolutely going round in circles here, hope someone can help. My son was recently made redundant and decided to work for himself. Went on HMRC site to register as self employed and came to a point where he was informed that he already had a UTR.
We think this might be from years ago - its possible that he registered as self employed but then almost immediately landed the job hes just been made redundant from, but he didnt go on to do any self employed work at that time.
Ive looked all over the HMRC site and cannot find a link where the number can be applied for, just a phone number - but on that section ti says he may fail the security question checks if he doesnt answer questions about his account - we dont know IF he has an account or not, no correspondence has ever been received about this.
Problem is, it seems the only way to ask is via the phone - luckily, from the start of self employment hes been exceptionally busy but this means he doesnt have endless hours to waste getting passed on to different departments or cant get through because of failed security questions regarding an account he may or may not have!
If anyone can point me in the direction of a link re this , it would be very helpful
Thanks

Has he set up an online personal tax account (via Government Gateway) ?
HMRC online services: sign in or set up an account: Sign in to HMRC online services - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
If he has, then any UTR he has should show up on the account home page1 -
Has now set up a Governemt Gateway. Completed the registration and now has UTR. Thanks for your help0
