Sink plug leaking

I've noticed lately that the washing up water is running away past the plug sometimes (its a 1.5 sink and I can't get a washing up bowl to fit).
Does that mean that it's perished somewhat, it looks ok. Or is there some pressure thing/suction going on with the drains?

This one doesn't owe me anything so I suppose a new plug it will be.
I'm just a bit confused as to why it only happens sometimes. At least it stops me from being lazy and leaving the dishes to soak!
