Help to left click to open emails in Thunderbird and Desktop documents in Windows 11, please.

I am not sure what I clicked to change this but now I cannot open emails in Thunderbird by left clicking only, as before. Now I have to right click then click to open in a new window or new tab before I can read the new or existing emails.
At the same time as this changed I have the same problem trying to open documents/folders on my Windows 11 desktop. Instead of opening easily by left clicking I now have to click and select "open."
I have tried Thunderbird settings but cannot see the appropriate tab to check.
I'll really appreciate help and any information about what I have done to cause this change, please, and to reverse it in Thunderbird emails and on my desktop.
Thank you.

Are you saying you can no longer double click to open anything ?
I take it this is a pc not a laptop?
It sounds like a mouse setting has changed
Type mouse into the search box and open the mouse settings window
Then have a read of this

If you are using a mouse then that could be faulty too

Yes, cerebus. I could no longer double click to open anything. I had to right click in an email then select open and, on my laptop desktop I also had to right click on folders or documents then select open.
Thank you very much for replying. I opened and read the link you gave. I cleaned the mouse thoroughly and, although I'm concerned not to be too optimistic, this has fixed the problem and both email and desktop items are opened by left clicking as before. I have tried several times since cleaning the mouse and, so far, it is definitely working normally.
The strange thing is that, before your reply, I changed my mouse to an older corded one I had previously and the problem was the same with that one. Oddly, the older one one still worked perfectly when I tried it on my old (seldom used) Toshiba laptop.
Thank you very much indeed for your really appreciated help. I cleaned the mouse with a screen wipe.0
