EDF Harrassment!

I’m wondering if anyone else are being constantly bombarded by EDF to confirm an appointment for an engineer to visit your home to replace both your Gas Meter and your Electricity Meter? I had a faulty Gas Meter last year and 4 Gas Meters later my current one is in place. I had to go through several days with a GAS LEAK due to one of the engineers fitting it incorrectly and I was so poorly. It’s a very long story so I won’t bore you all with it but suffice to say, my current meter is only 1 year+ old and I do not want to go through that again. Do I have to accept and allow them to replace, due to their constant barrage of calls, texts, emails and even home visits? Am I going against the LAW. If not, please can you give me advice on what to say when EDF call again and again and again! Finally, if EDF replace Gas and Electric Meters, does that mean we are then in a FIXED CONTRACT with them or if the fit say today, I can still SWITCH PROVIDER without any Penalty Costs incurred. I am not in a contract with EDF now, it’s just simply a rolling one? I am also a Vulnerable Lady due to health issues and I am on their system as such. Sorry for this HUMUNGOUS essay and THANKYOU in advance for any help/guidance you give your valuable time to provide /suggest. X

So are they replacing them for smart meters?Life in the slow lane0

If the electric meter is life expired they are within their rights to change it and could do it by force if they wished with any additional costs being passed on to you. They will most likely replace them as a pair of smart meters. Having the meters replaced will not put you in any form of fixed contract and you will be free to move.

If you are not in a fixed term you could switch today. It may be a while before the next one tries. I too don't want my meters changing as last time they left me with a gas leak & tried to charge me to fix it.

I can absolutely understand your reluctance to have the meters swapped if you've only just got the current one working. If it's the smart meter roll out that's driving EDF to swap them again then it's almost certainly inevitable that you'll have to have it done sooner or later. And the suppliers themselves are under huge pressure to get the smart meter roll out complete. Some of the tactics they use make my blood boil but whatever the rights and wrongs of it are the ongoing calls etc. are likely to continue until you finally relent. You may find that other suppliers hassle you less, but wherever you go you're going to need to get the meters swapped on some stage. So your reallistic options are to learn to live with the pressure to have the meters swapped out or just bow to the inevitable and have it done. The vast majority of meter swaps just happen without incident and hopefully whatever caused the string of difficulties you had before have been resolved and the install will be straightforward.0
