in Cutting tax
Hello,
I did some freelance work for about 3 months in 2019 / 2020 and file for self-assessment and owed £0 because I was below the threshold. I then got a full-time job and advised HMRC I no longer needed to complete self-assessment.

I have now received a bill for £200 for failing to file in 2021/2022 and 2022/2023.
Do I have to pay this? How do I tell them I work full-time I do not have any reason to complete self-assessment! I contacted them before and they have obviously not updated their records!!

Did they send you a letter/message via goverment gateway confirming you did not need to complete one?
I had to file a self assessment for two years. I returned one again for tax year 22/23 even though I knew I did not need to do one (i just ticked no to all the qs other than being in paye employment. They then messaged me about 7 days later to confirming I no longer needed to complete a self assessment unless my circumstances changed0 -
No because I phoned them and said I got a full-time job and wouldn’t need to do this again. I only earned about £2000 - £3000 in the first place in 2019/2020 when I was a student! I don’t believe I ever received anything through gateway.0

What do I need to do now? Am I forced to pay this bill? How do I get off this self-assessment request / requirement?0

If you click on MESSAGES on the top line of your personal tax account you'll see what they sent you.
My list goes back to 6 April 2015.0 -
Complete the required returns and appeal the fines.
When your returns are processed HMRC will close your self assessment record if appropriate.0 -
Did you change address and weren't getting the notices to file and penalty notices?0

Unfortunately you need to keep filing until they give you permission not to. Never accept anything from them over the phone it always needs to be in writing.

Hello all, thanks so much for all the advice! I have filed for everything that was late and appealed the two fines. Does anyone know how long the appeal process can take?0
