Car insurance new address

I am moving out of my house next week and staying with my brother temporarily for approx 6-8 weeks until my new house purchase completes. I checked with my insurance company and they want £148 to make the change! Do I really need to advise them for such a short time? I know that premiums are calculated on postcodes but my brother has lived there 20 years and has had no issues with car theft or damage. I really do think that the cost to change the address is absolutely extortionate

6-8 weeks isn’t really a short time. What if the purchase is delayed and it becomes 12-16 weeks? Your insurance needs to reflect where the car is kept ‘normally’. The fee might not just be for ‘moving address’ it might also be for increased risk (even if your brother hasn’t experienced any issue). The answer is you be honest and truthful. If you forget to tell them, and nothing happens you get away with it. If it’s stolen and you make a claim, and they find out you weren’t honest and truthful, your insurance policy will be ‘cancelled’, you won’t get a pay out, and for decades to come you’ll have to answer the question ‘have you had an insurance policy cancelled’ and say ‘yes’ and then have to be increased premiums forever. Far more than £148.
Your choice.Pay the money as part of the house moving process - all goes well.Don’t pay the money - get caught - years of extra payments.
Dont pay the money - don’t get caught - you get away with it.
I know where my money would lie for the sake of £148.0 -

Unfortunately the insurance company doesn't based it's pricing on just one individual's home. It's the whole neighbourhood. Bro's house might be fine but what about those ones closer to the main road or around the corner?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Was your car previously kept off road overnight and will now be on the road, or at least in a less secure location than previously?
