any experience of full and final settlements??

hi i have just cleared a £1650 debt by paying £1300 (with some help from my lovely dad). this was an overdraft with abbey.

i am trying to do the same with a capital one mastercard and an alliance & leicester credit card.

i have 2 questions for you all;
1. a&l said they would have to do a credit check first before they would work one out. is this true and why ??

2.capital one offered me to clear the £1180 debt with £1000

is this the best deal i can expect or should i push for a lower sum ?
i have 28 days to pay it once agreed so would use my overdraft to get rid of it which i would clear in about 3 weeks.

any ideas anyone?
