Travel insurance - multi country trip - can I save by split ticketing the countries?

Hi

Here is my plan
Fly to NY on May 17th.
Fly to Peru direct from NY on May 21st
Return to UK July 30th

Insurance for the whole trip is £650.  Seems expensive so I thought to do this:
- USA for 4 days so I planned to buy a seperate insurance - £40
- For the rest of the trip I pay something like £350
I'm conscious that  the insurance wording (I read 4 policies so far) says trips must begin and end in UK.
Questions - Can I buy insurance for just the Peru part of my trip only?  And if I do then what dates to I get the cover for; a)  Total trip length - May 17th to June 30th OR b) May 21st to June 30th.

Maybe it can be like 'split ticketing' for insurance?

Thr requirement is that trips have to start and finish in the UK. So if you go to Peru from America that won't work.  Your only option is to  buy insurance  to cover the whole trip from start to finish whatever the cost.

Does that not answer your question?

A couple of years ago I paid £823 for insurance for 2 people to travel worldwide incl. North America for 18 months. That was just basic Tesco Backpacker insurance, but unless you have particular needs (and being Peru, coverage at high altitude may be a particular concern) then you should be able to get insurance a lot cheaper.

No, I had a similar long trip going through multiple countries and over the standard 30 days in length. You do need insurance for the whole trip UK - UK. Not only would it be a technical reason to disclaim, they do see it as higher risk going from place to place, more chance for issues to develop , more bookings that could be directly affected by the prior travel.

Some other places to look for more options and hence may bring the price down:
    - annual worldwide multi trip insurance, somehow came out cheaper than a single trip, even with the non standard max trip length
    - backpacker's insurance sites

I am aware of two companies whose policies do NOT have that requirement for the trip to begin and end in the UK: True Traveller and Nomads. I have generally found them to be expensive, but since the USA is very expensive you might find that buying two separate policies so that you only paid US rates for the four days would save you money.

Annual travel insurance 45 days+ per trip:

An example rather than a specific recommendation. They were better under Mapfre.

Thank you so much for this tip.  True Traveller offer annual multi trip insurance that extends to 70 days for a single trip, including USA cover.  The best value we found.
  • We have gone ahead and purchased a policy.  Thank you so much for the thoughts and assistance.

Final thought, based on the tip above, it does seem possible to split ticket with True Traveller, however the cost somehow comes to much more than the Annual Policy!  Not quite what I expected.
