    The problem with keeping accounts "alive" is that you then rule out possible future switches.
    Hardly ever and decreasingly. Based on their most recent offers Nationwide, Lloyds Bank, Halifax, Natwest/RBS/Ulster and Santander haven't excluded existing customers.
    Additionally First Direct have always been 'once ever', so (in theory at least) it makes no difference if you close the account or not. So too did Virgin Money but their last offer was over 18 months ago now and could well end up being their last offer if the Nationwide deal completes in the timescales both parties anticipate (note - not saying it won't happen, but I wouldn't hold out hope!).
    That just leaves HSBC UK, Co-op Bank and Barclays as providers who exclude existing customers but allow returning ones to participate.
