Holiday whilst on sick

Options
Hi, I’ve been on the sick for 6 months due to several breaks in my leg and pelvis, my leg is fully healed but require another operation, I have been told I’m not able to go back to work until I’ve had this operation. My partner has booked a surprise get away to Spain for 5 nights next week. How do I go about telling my employer as I’m still on the sick

You are deemed unfit for work, not unfit to live.

I'm not sure you need to tell your employer at all.  Just ensure your travel insurance covers you as it sounds like you are still undergoing treatment.

I hope you have travel insurance and have declared that you are awaiting a further operation.

Being unfit for work does not mean you cannot have a holiday.
  • What does your fit note from your GP say?  It should state whether or not you can perform certain work related tasks.
It’s really how your employer interprets this, giving consideration to the effects of travelling and any holiday activities.
You could get your GPs opinion.

As others have said, check your travel insurance cover.  It's possible your normal insurer won't provide cover or will require a large increase in payment.  It would certainly be inadvisable to go abroad without travel insurance in your current state of health.

While accepting the earlier comment that it may not be necessary to disclose anything to your employer, I'd suggest that this question is actually closer to an employment one than a travel one as such:

Having said that, disclosing everything to your travel insurer is undoubtedly appropriate....

I went on holiday whilst off sick. Holiday was booked before sickness, and I had to inform my supervisor I was going away. Apparently if I hadn't it would have been a disciplinary offence.

Maybe avoid posting holiday exploits and pictures to social media - especially if you choose not to inform employer.

You need to advise your employer so that they allocate you holiday  time off.

What work do you do? Travelling is probably more physically demanding than most jobs, so would have thought if you've been told you're unfit to work then you'd also be unfit for travel. Clearly this might not be the case if you have a physically demanding job.

Have you asked your GP, if you travel against advice that would normally invalidate travel insurance and as you have an issue which means you're unfit to work you'd need to declare it and probably be expected to get the OK from your GP/consultant.
