Old paper driving licences redundant?

Options
Just turned up my old paper driving licence in a drawer. Am I right in assuming this can safely be disposed of, given that I've had a photo ID card for some years now?

You should have sent it back when you changed to a photo licence if I remember the rules correctly.

True, but DVLA do not seem to worry if the old licence is not returned

Depends whether he means a real old paper licence (should in theory have been sent back) or a paper counterpart to a photo card (advice was to dispose of them when they became obsolete).

In practice the answer is the same either way - bin it, keep it or frame it, nobody will care.
  • Thanks for the confirmation.

DVLA stopped issuing paper licences a quarter of a century ago.

They're still valid for those who haven't moved, haven't added categories, and haven't needed to renew them (on hitting 70, or because of medical reasons) since then.

Everybody else has a photocard. That used to be accompanied by a paper counterpart, but they became redundant nearly a decade ago, and should have been destroyed.

If you have a photocard, any old paper licence is superceded, and should be destroyed unless you want to keep it for posterity for whatever reason...
