yes , its dell and yes its xp
    Nice to save.
  • If so try :when the machine is booting pressing F8 several times until you get the windows advanced options menu. Then select the last known good configuration and press enter. This should restart the computer with the last known set of good settings.
    If this doesnt work try:
To repair this problem, you will need to to use the recovery console. You can get to this by starting your computer using the Windows XP installation Disc. Follow the steps at the link below. After you get to a prompt, type the following
    COPY \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE\WININET.DLL \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WININET.DLL
Then type Exit and see if your computer starts up.

    Hope this helps!!

thanks, have tried last w c but not worked, so will have to go for recovery disc.
does this mean i will lose everything on laptop?
    Nice to save.
  • Have you only got a recovery disc? or have you got a full xp disc?
  • If you have a full xp disc, you can try going to recovery console and running CHKDSK to check that the harddrive is ok.
  • You could remove the hard drive, put it in another machine and copy pictures, documents etc before you start recovery, although this will not save any programmes that you have installed.

i have a full xp disc, how do i get to recovery console and run chkdsk?
    Nice to save.
  • put the XP disc in the drive and reboot the machine. The machine has to be set to boot from the CD, most Dell machines are already set to this and you will get a prompt as the machine boots "Press any key to boot from the CD...." press a key and boot from the CD.

Once the XP CD is booting you will need to press F6 to get into the recovery options, from there select the recovery console. This will load as a command prompt, from here you can run the CHKDSK program to check your HD.

I Hope this helps, if you have access to another machine you can create a boot floppy that contains the tools such as chkdsk and other things that may help.
  • I'm off out now, good luck!!
