Amex referral bonus eligibility

I recently referred my wife to Amex and there is a £40 bonus cashback now showing in my account.

I read separately that you need to spend £3k/year to be eligible to receive any cashback. Is this also true of the £40 bonus; e.g. I need to spend £3k not to forfeit the bonus referral cashback?
