The legal way for the ipod is that you will have to buy them from the Itunes library.

I am not so sure thats the only way to legaly watch on an ipod, if you own the original dvd you can copy it rip it to an ipod compaitible format and watch it at your leisure maybe i am wrong i am not 100% sure, but i think i am right as long as you own the original you can copy it as long as you do not pass on or sale either the copy or original you are not breaking any laws.

We have tried to download dvds on to the ipod but they are all encrypted. Is it actually possible to download them? We thought like youself that it would be ok as it is for personal use. How would we do it if at all possible. Thanks

Download Handbrake and use one of the iPod presets to do the conversion from DVD to MP4. It may take some experimentation to discover the bitrate you're happy with...
