Post office want deposit made by cheque!

I just opened a post office easy access account, and they requested my deposit be sent by cheque from my nominated account.
Is this standard for everybody?
I want to do everything online.
Thanks.

Which account in particular did you open? What was it called and what %? The 4.1% "Instant Saver" does seem to be cash, cheque or internal transfer for the initial deposit.

The 5.06% online account seems to suffer no such limitation.

EDIT: my post crossed by OPs update. Are you sure you opened the Online Saver? If you have access to the account on browser it seems to be as simple as setting up a payee on from your current account... See the terms:

    Making deposits
You can make the most of your Online Saver by adding more money to the account. You can make deposits in a number of ways: One electronic payment from your linked account – firstly telephone the bank or building society that provide your linked account, or log into their online banking service. Then simply provide your Post Office Online Saver account number and sort code (we’ll send this to you once your account is open) together with the amount you’d like to deposit into your Online Saver. Your bank or building society would normally send this to your Online Saver account by Faster Payments.

Set up a standing order from your linked account.
Again, by using your linked account’s online banking or telephone service, you can set up a standing order that will send regular deposits from your linked account to your Online Saver account.

By internal transfer from an eligible Post Office savings account.
Log into the online servicing site at www.postoffice.co.uk using your username, date of birth and 6 Digit Security Numer (6DSN) to make a transfer to and from any of your eligible Post Office savings accounts, subject to the terms and conditions of the accounts.

Post office savings get a generally bad press on this forum. Archaic systems, poor service etc
Also the actual savings provider is not the Post Office, which probably complicates matters.

To be fair, OP said they "opened a post office easy access account" and both the Online Saver and Instant Saver products are listed as such at https://www.postoffice.co.uk/savings-accounts/easy-access-accounts

To be fair they are entirely different accounts that offer means of access. That's what I was trying to clarify.

It might just be a one-off, as part of their ID verification?
