someone i know bought a recliner chair from a shop that didnt have one to try out but had the sofa to check for comfort but when the recliner was delivered it was uncomfortable with wooden slats, is there any comeback for a refund?

Given you mention trying out other items it sounds likely to be an instore purchase in which case it comes down to the terms they agreed to0 -

Tell your friend to check the store's policy about refunds and returns.
Many stores will allow change of mind returns as policy, even though there are no statutory rights. Your friend should expect to have to pay the cost of returning the chair. John Lewis and Next, for example, charge £30 to collect a large piece of furniture.
Even without a policy, items can be returned for full refund if that was agreed as part of the contract. If your friend asked 'Can I return it if I don't like it?' and the store agreed to it, that is what they are obliged to do.0
