Nina, portrayed by Portman, epitomizes the life of a dedicated ballerina in a bustling New York City ballet company. Her existence, much like that of her peers, revolves entirely around the world of dance. Complicating matters is her domineering mother Erica (played by Hershey), a former ballerina whose overbearing presence casts a suffocating shadow over Nina's life. When the artistic director, Thomas Leroy (Cassel), decides to replace the prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Ryder) for their upcoming production of Swan Lake, Nina emerges as his top choice. However, her bid for the coveted role faces stiff competition from the entrancing newcomer, Lily (Kunis), who captivates Leroy with her raw talent.
