Trying to return faulty headset

I purchased a wireless Sony headset from the EE Store (had a discount code that I could use!).
The headset is faulty, in the sense it randomly disconnects for no reason - it seems to be a well documented issue when researching online forums.
The item was purchased and I receive delivery on the 8th April - so within my 14 days.
When I go to the EE website and request a return, I am informed I must contact and troubleshoot with Sony, after which they will provide me with a returns number, which I then provide to EE for them to accept the return?
When I try the Sony website I keep getting 'Page unavailable' messages. Their phone support puts me on hold for ages and I gave up.
As I purchased the item from EE directly, and am within my 14 day period, isn't it up to the retailer to rectify any issues or refund?? Or am I forced to troubleshoot with Sony first, even though I no longer want the item and would prefer a straight refund?

You are right it is the retailer who has to refund you and you have 14 days from delivery to inform them you want to return it so keep trying0

You no longer want the item and would like a refund.
Within what's left of those 14 days make a clear statement to EE that you are cancelling the contract according to your rights given by the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013.
Do it in writing (email is fine).
Do it now!2
