USB-C

I have a monitor with a built-in webcam that runs off a USB-C port.  The monitors USB-C port supports power delivery, data and DisplayPort alt mode.

I would like to connect a laptop and a desktop PC to the monitors webcam.

I want the laptop to charge from the monitors USB-C port power delivery, connect to the monitors display using the DisplayPort alt mode and connect the webcam using the USB-C data.

The desktop PC only needs to connect to the webcam over USB-C so I think it only needs USB-C data.  The desktop PC has separate video and power connections.

I therefore think I need some sort of USB-C hub to allow me to connect to both laptop and desktop PC.

Any other suggestions?

Laptops can be charged via USB-C if a specific standard is provided from it, and whether the laptop can be charged from a USB-C port (some can but a lot can't),  but its probably going to be far easier just to get a docking station or something.

How does your laptop currently charge?
If it charges through a USB-C port now then OK, but if it has a seperate power connection then it almost certainly is not cabable of being charged through USB-C.
You also need to be careful when buying USB-C cables, some only deliver power and not data as well.
(If they are only for charging then they don't need the data wires so can be made more cheaply).
On other point not directly connected to your question, but about USB-C charging.
Some devices with a USB-C power input cannot be charged with certain USB-C chargers, it's a safety feature.
Many chargers will do it, but I have a new one that won't, it will only charge them from its USB-A outlet using an A to C connection cable.
It happens because the device to be charged isn't 'smart' enough to tell the charger how much power it wants/needs.
Some (many) chargers in that case will just put 5V-3A out through the USB-C outlet, but others like that one of mine will err on the safety side and provide nothing from the USB-C outlet if/when one of those 'dumb' devices is connected to it.

The desktop USB C needs to support Display Port over USB-C to be able to deliver display, audio and power.

However I've come across this which will allow you to connect a laptops power input port to a USB-C charger, powerbank, or other USB power source capable of delivering enough power to charge the laptop.
Very handy if your laptops original charger is missing or broken.
