There were a few cats just buried in the back garden of the house I grew up in. Not marked, just dug deep (foxes), looking back we were not sentimental about pets. I'm not bothered by having moved far away and they're deep enough that they wouldn't be dug up accidentality.
Our last cat was put to sleep at the vets - I don't think I paid for a cremation, just "reverently disposed of" or some phrase like that, didn't get ashes back. Again much loved but not in the way of a surrogate child.

Sounds from your post that you'd want something by way of memorial so these options might not suit you.
Other posters have suggested options for that.

We have always buried our deceased pets in the garden (one dog, several cats).  Most of them are in our old garden which we left in 2015.  Our last two cats are buried in our present garden (they lived to be 19 and 22!).

I understand some people want a memorial that they can keep.  I think any of the options mentioned here are good.

Our 13 year old family cat passed at home on Christmas Eve last year (great timing to the last!)

I used a local pet crematorium in the Newcastle upon Tyne area who were absolutely incredible from start to finish (including e-mailing me back at 7am on Boxing Day and opening up specially for us. We took her in a box with treats and some of her favourite toys and were asked if we wanted everything cremated or just her. We asked them to cremate everything, Pharaoh style!  :)

You can have a group cremation which is cheaper, or a singular cremation where you know the ashes back are your pet, but it is more expensive. We paid about £160 IIRC, but the size of the animal makes a huge difference.
