I tried to take my own nails off too before I was having a brand new set to save time. I sat there for ages with my fingers in acetone and in the end picked them off - don't do this as it wrecked my nails!! My nail technician advised that I should have filed the top of the nails first as she also uses gel to finish them. That's why mine were still on as I hadn't done this bit!! :)

I bought mine from Sainsburys. It was with the nail varnish removers but was for soaking nails off.

Im a nail extension veteran, and this is what my technician advises - soak nail size piece of cotton wool in acetone, put onto the nail and wrap fingertip with tin foil. Leave until cooked, and they will dissolve into goo.
Apply cuticle oil, olive oil is fine too ,and buff.

I am a Nail Technician too and this is the method i use.
You should if you remember to apply cuticle oil every night at bedtime and use a good hand and nail cream after washing your hands.
