Muting sound on Instagram Reels

When using Instagram Reels on an Android phone I could mute the sound by tapping the screen and the video would continue to play silently.
As of yesterday (without any changes made by me that I am aware of) when I tap the screen it pauses the playback and when I tap it again to restart, the sound is still unmuted. Is there a setting for this or is it a change instigated by Instagram? My wifes phone still operates as mine used to i.e. tapping the screen continues playback but muted.

Mine does the same but only on certain reels. On others it works as I expect it to.
I suspect its something to do with how the reel is uploaded or recorded or whatever.1
