I think that the only people saying that you need to have a good credit score to get a loan or a mortgage are the companies that sell you a subscription to review your credit scores. So it's in their interest to scare you into thinking you need their service. And the banks never look at them so it doesn't matter.
More important that you, as others have reiterated, provide a positive credit history. And also register to vote as that makes you look stable.
