An appeal is always possible however the rules on how student loans, whether taken or not, affect UC are pretty clear so the OP should not get their hopes up, I'm sure that UC would like it all back in a lump sum although I suspect they'll be happy with a payment plan.
On a more general point it is important to remember student maintenance loans only cover three terms, Autumn, Winter and Spring. It is therefore possible for students to claim UC in the summer term as they have no unearned income in the form of maintenance loans to declare. Hardly any of them do claim though, they'd rather be off 'doing stuff' instead of being subject to UC commitments.
In the OP's situation I would expect the majority of the UC they have received will need repaying but any UC paid for AP's ending in the summer term should be okay.
