Smart Meter - Switching electric supplier

Hi all,

recently moved into a new house and the previous owner had her gas with British Gas and electricity with EDF.

I recently changed it so both gas and elec are with British Gas.

My question is can British Gas remove my current smart meter which was fitted by edf and then install their own? Or can British Gas use the same smart meter?

I’m having issues with them setting up the smart meter for my gas as well because they need edf to supply them the current reading of the meter first.

The meters do not get changed.

Can you confirm that when you moved in you contacted Edf  and gave them meter reads - only then can you move yo BG,
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

I couldn’t give them the reading as I was unable to open the smart meter cabinet. But I got the letter saying the switch is complete but BG can’t setup the meter reading for the gas or electric until edf give them the final reading.

I should be able to open the cabinet by Friday and see if bg will take the reading from me.

What makes it more difficult is you can’t speak to anyone on the phone. They just direct you to the web chat which is not helpful.

So how did you confirm that the people you bought the house off have given accurate move out readings?

If your meter is in an external cabinet there may be a sort of key required to open it but any key of the right sort will open any cabinet and the keys only cost a few pounds.  Search "meter box key" and you will see lots you can purchase.  Maybe you know this already, have ordered one and it's arriving on Friday?
