Probate with no will and creditors

my ex died recently leaving a half paid for house, some debts and no will. I've been quoted 7.5K for a probate solicitor. We have 3 kids (2 adults, and a 16 year old now living with me permanently).
I'd like to save as much as I can for them obviously.
Does it sound feasible for us to go through getting probate/letters of administration without a solicitor - much as I hate to say it, no will and creditors feels like it might be alot to manage without solicitor. Anyone had similar experience? thanks alot

Will the estate still be solvent once the debts are paid, including any money still owed on the house? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.2 -
Yes, I think there will be about 50-60K left over

No will isn’t an issue because it’s fairly straightforwards if all estate goes to his children. Although it will probably need to be one of them who applies rather than you, although obviously you can do all the legwork to help them out. From all the posts I’ve seen on here and the help that people give, if there’s nothing horribly complex in there you could do it without a solicitor. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

I don't think there is any reason why you can't do it - just have to go through it methodically, keep good records and make sure you know of all the creditors. If you get a solicitor to do it, they will still want you (or your adult children) to provide a lot of the info1

The children, or at least adult children, need to apply for letters of administration. You can help find the information required but they need to do it as they are the people who will inherit under intestacy. You may need documented power of attorney to deal with any of the creditors and other accounts.
Any pensions? Will your youngest benefit for pensions for minors? Was there any nomination of beneficiaries? It could be the kids or a past squeeze.
And obviously debts. Has anyone spoken to the current mortgage provider? Any life cover? If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing2 -
There are no pensions and no life cover we are aware of0

I understood I could go on the probate request as the guardian of my remaining dependent, along with the older two of course0
