VAT on a quote

I've just had a quote (Word document attachment sent by email) for a kitchen installation from an installer that works for a nationwide kitchen company. VAT is quoted separately on the quote but there is no VAT number anywhere. Is this normal at quote stage??
(additional info: They are not a limited company, don't appear to have a website or appear anywhere on the web. They are also asking for a deposit).

Their tax affairs are none of your concern tbh.

A quote doesn't need a VAT number on it, invoices do.

Not having any presence can be concern, but some old school companies have been going forever and don't seem to need one.  It doesn't help with ensuring their credibility though.

    Where did you find them?

Only formal VAT invoices require a VAT number and then only other VAT registered entities can demand one.

It's not just old school companies... some trades folk get 90%+ of their customers from the same source and so aren't actively pursuing new work outside of the existing streams.

The OP states they are working with a national company so presumably they've bought a kitchen from Wren or Hygiena etc who have appointed their "local fitter" so not actively selected by the OP
