Loft hatch catch not working

I cannot open the drop down loft hatch which has not been used for a while. It has a catch that is activated by pulling down on a metal 'eye' with a hook and pole, this retracts the catch which is on the inside of the hatch IYSWIM.
I remember that the screw that the 'eye' is on the end of can be rotated to loosen the catch slightly if there is an issue, but I cannot remember if it is clockwise or not and I'm afraid of undoing it too far in case it falls out.
I've tried pushing the door up and down with the screw both loosed at various degrees and tightened flush to the door. Nothing has worked so far.
As a lady 'of a certain age' I may not have the strength to push the door up to unjamb it, I guess I would be more confident if I knew which way I should be turning the screw on the 'eye'.
Thanks for any help
