Company car benefit tax for old job - refund owed?

Hey all,

I left my last job in Sept 2023 and started my new job on 2nd October 23. I had a company car at my old job, but access to a pool car in my new job - which I'm not entitled to use for personal use, or to take it home at night.

I happened to notice on my HMRC app this morning that under my current employer, I have a car benefit listed of £6376. I clicked into it and it seems to relate to my old company car. I've removed the car from my benefits as I no longer have access to that car, and as mentioned, the pool car I have access to is not a benefit.

My question - will I, in theory, be owed a refund from HMRC if I have been paying tax on my old company car since Sept 2023 til now?

Also, was it my responsibility to remove the car benefit when I left my old job, or should my previous employer have notified HMRC that I was no longer using my company car?

Thanks all.

Was the tax code used by your new employer from October to the end of the tax year the same as the one the old employer used?

Your old employer would normally send notification but the crucial thing is to make sure your 2023-24 P11D from the old employer is correct and reflects the date the vehicle was no longer available.

    Thanks for responding!

My current tax code is 559L and my previous tax code was 709L.

I don't have access to my P11D currently but I'll try to find it.

You many well behaved due a refund.

Your old employer has several months yet to even create the P11D so I wouldn't expect to have received it just yet?

It seems quite common for there to be tax errors when you change jobs. With me they added both annual salaries together !
