Downstairs, my TV is plugged into an outdoor ariel on my roof and that gives me a great signal. i wouldn't be confident about running cable form this - I have no head for heights!

It is an Aerial, not Ariel, (ariel is / was washing powder).;)

You do not need to go up on to the roof to connect a second set to your existing aerial, a two way booster will usually do the trick, this plugs in behind your existing TV and then a cable is run to the 2nd set.
  • Unless she lives in a good signal area, it will be insufficient.

To see what sort of aerial is needed, type your postcode in here: http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd.exe?

Personally, I think the Televes DAT45 is generally a good choice:

..or for poor signal areas, the DAT75:

  • If you already have a proper aerial (on your roof or in loft) then you could run some co-axial (normal aerial wire) to daughters room.

Sorry to appear a little thick, but I've just bought another aerial so that I can get my new upstairs digital TV working........but it is going to have to go up on the roof as I cant get all the channels from just siting it in the loft.

Are you saying that I don't need two aerials and instead I (or A N other) just need to hook some wire up to the aerial already up on the roof?

    Thanks in advance ;)

You just need a coax splitter. My bedroom TV is connected to the same roof aerial as the living room aerial. Both receiving digital perfectly well and the aerial is about 25/30 years old.

As others have suggested it may be wise to get an aerial booster (something that plugs into the mains that you plug your aerial/coax into and another aerial/coax aerial coming out to the splitter and TVs. The closer you have the booster to the actual aerial along the "system" the better. I only suggest it because you may end up with metres and metres of coax cable going to the TVs and the signal can degrade significantly.

True and very cheap say 50p, however, this little device splits the signal in two so you will be back where you were with too little signal.

These voltages are really small, around 1uV thats 1 micro volt or 1 millionth of a volt. Poor quality connections and cables, this little voltage don't get to the end of the cable...

Best way is a powered Aerial Distribution Amplifier

  • I wouldn't necessarily assume that because your analogue signal is poor, your digital signal will also be poor.
It's how it's meant to work, but my sister in Clevedon can only get 1 channel on analogue. However, I gave her my old Freeview box and she can receive all her area's channels.

Where I am, my analogue picture is rubbish on my internal aerial. On Freeview, it's also rubbish. I bought a fancy digital-ready internal aerial that was meant to be good, which featured a booster. It was no better than an £8 internal aerial someone gave me so it got returned.
With a lot of fiddling about, I can now get a good freeview signal with the internal aerial balanced on the curtains and partially tied to the ceiling. It cuts out if a tall lorry drives past my house in the way of the aerial.

External aerial is highly recommended, if it is at all possible, but you CAN sometimes get by without one.

As mentioned, "Ariel" is washing powder and won't help your reception at all. And there's no such thing as a "digital aerial" (or Ariel). It's just marketing hype used to sell "eye candy" products which are often useless in poor signal areas. I recommend you read the advice on this page: http://sam-radford.me.uk/freeview.htm
