Why did shares rocket during lockdown?

The shares and funds crashed around 2020 and have now recovered now.
Buying in the dup is a good idea but many including myself sometimes get scared.

I never advocate market timing, but the lockdown crash is the only time I pulled it off successfully. It was "be greedy when others are fearful" on steroids.
(I'm conscious of my privilege in having money spare that I could afford to risk in the markets, but on the other hand, we didn't get anything from furlough as I could work from home.)
