Section 75 - have I paid via credit card or Paypal?

Hi

I've tried making a Section 75 claim on a closed credit card account.  They say I used paypal to pay for the item therefore I have no Section 75 protection.  My question is how can I tell if I used paypal or not?   I can see the transaction in my paypal account - it says paid with Amazon credit card (which would've been a linked card) - I cannot see the credit card statement to see the entry as the card account was closed many months ago.

If paypal were 'only' the transaction processor would the transaction still appear on my paypal account?

I wouldn't normally pay via paypal if there was an option to just pay by credit card.  The seller has gone bust (hence section 75 claim) so I can't recreate their check out process.

Many thanks for any help

What does your invoice say about the payment method used?

If the transaction shows within your PayPal account then that suggests that you must have logged in to PayPal in order to proceed with payment, which is likely to have broken the debtor-creditor-supplier chain as afar as s75 is concerned - if the supplier had simply used PayPal as a payment processor then I don't believe it would have shown on your PayPal account.

There is only one way it shows in your PayPal account and thats you used PayPal

From a consumer it's easy to spot PayPal payments as the merchant shows "PAYPAL * Merchant Name", no doubt your bank will have further information that helps them identify those in the supply chain.

I think you have answered you own question there.
If it's in your pay pal account, then you used pay pal to pay.

How long ago was the transaction & what exactly was it?

If it was a purchase & you have not received the goods, then you have 180 days to open a pay pal dispute for non receipt.

    Life in the slow lane
  • Thanks for responses - I suspected that might have been the case - transaction is couple of years old so looks like I'll have to wear this one as well outside the paypal dispute process.
