Can smart meters display the wrong rate?

Hi, everyone,
A couple of days ago, purely by chance, I've noticed that my EDF smart meter still displays the old (pre April 1) energy prices. And judging by the daily usage cost it displays, I suspect, it's still calculating the bill based on those higher prices.

Is this a common oversight? It's worrying because I never thought I need to keep an eye on that too... I didn't think it was possible to make such an error.

I've contacted them, but it often takes a week for them to reply.

Cheers,

PS Check your meters, you guys :-)

By Smart Meter I think you are talking abouter bo the In House Display in yourer box kitchen.etet

Yes it can some time to catch up with the April 1st change.

The actual Smart Meter is in an outside meter box or garage.

Don't worry it's not used for billing and you're not paying too much
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

The smart meter is the one in the cupboard connected to your incoming gas or electricity suppl. The IHD (In Home Device) is the thing you've got indoors that reads consumption info (in kwh) from the smart meter and does the sums to calculate the cost based on the cost data that its got in its memory

The IHD gets its consumption data from the smart meter plus occasionally getting updates from your supplier so although it tells you how much you've consumed in kwh it can only do accurate cost info when it eventually gets updated cost data from the supplier.

That could take days, weeks or even months because although the data comes from your supplier they have to notify the DCC who do the update communication with your smart meter etc. They've probably got something like15million or more meters to update (and they'll all be a bit different, so its not a blanket update across the whole country) so don't hold your breath whilst waiting.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • Thanks for your replies, you're awesome! Yeah, sorry for the confusion, I should've specified that that both IHD and the actual Smart Meter in the cupboard display the old rate. But I guess that doesn't change your main message that I'm not overpaying. Thanks!
  • It should be noted that the IHD gets all its data, including current tariff, from the meter. If it’s displaying the old prices then the physical meter on the wall would still be set to those prices too (the supplier sends the update to the meter, the IHD then simply reads what the meter tells it), so in this case it actually wouldn’t be wrong to say the meter is displaying the wrong rate.

In any case the previous posters are correct that these figures are not used for billing and shouldn’t be difficult for your supplier to correct if they know what they’re doing.
