Social housing - how long after offer did you move in?

Hello all

If you were offered a council house, how long after did you move in? Did it need major repairs/work?

We were offered around 3 weeks ago, but no timeframe given as of yet due to replacement of kitchen/bathroom

You would be best asking the council concerned what their plan is.  Every council is different.  I would be surprised if it was done quickly though. But worth waiting for.  I moved into a council place with missing kitchen cupboard doors, mould and drawer fronts missing.., took two years to get it replaced and only then because I managed to get it done through the council under a grant.
  • Thank you Deannagone. Tried to ring up but the lettings officer isn't easy to get hold of :( I thought it would be easy to be patient once we had the offer, but it's the fact that you can't accept it officially until viewing which is making it abit harder. Will try ring up next week to get a rough timeframe

  • We were offered in the August and moved in mid October. They did replace the kitchen apparently after ripping out a for better one.

Previous tenants also added a "wooden extension" that wasn't permitted so needed to be removed first

I viewed on a Tuesday and signed for it on the Friday.
Mine was refurbished/repaired before it went onto the bidding system so was fit to let straight away.
  • Thank you all! It's good to hear different experiences. I'm guessing it will be a month or 2 then due to the replacement and coming to think of it, they probably aren't sure themselves how long it will take. It all feels a bit unreal because we haven't signed anything but that's the process and we will just have to wait. Thanks all

I viewed on the Tuesday, accepted the house on the same day. Signed the tenancy agreement and picked up the keys the following Monday. I didn't move in until 4 weeks later because I had to give 1 months notice where I was living at the time.

The new kitchen had already been fitted before I viewed it. There were some issues that needed to be sorted before I moved in and they were.

I accepted the offer early April. Was allowed to view it to assess for suitability end of April as the tenants didn’t remove out till April 24th. I’ll be getting the keys on May 31st which is a lot longer than I had thought it would be. I can’t officially move in until June 6th due to lack of removals availability. I’m not sure exactly what they’ve done - I do know they had to repaint it and fix some issues with the kitchen and bathroom. The bank holidays haven’t helped. I’m really excited to finally see it properly next week.

  • I was downsizing from a two bed property that my council wanted, to a housing association property bungalow (different companies, so my time in previous one did not count to the rent, which went up to current prices, I had, had a good deal for time in last property but it was worth the new rent to me, despite being a smaller property, area was nicer and at time it was age related rental, no longer is but as one bedroom and bungalow, even if newer neighbours move in that are not as nice as the current 11 other properties it is detached enough, unlike the flat I wanted to move from due to neighbours children). Viewed and accepted same day, signed for the next week, given keys but also told they would be paying the rent on the new property for a month, I was going to offer/ask if I could do that since it needed flooring that I was supplying, much easier in an empty property for the shop I was using, also new furniture had to be delivered. So had a month with keys to both properties, to remove old furniture and install new in current. Very smooth process from a 40 year occupied property to the new one.
