Nine and a half year passport renewal done.

Just renewed my wife's passport which expires in August, but is as useful as the proverbial Chocolate Tea Pot.

Why can't we get a reduction for months that it's impossible to use due to EU rules?
Regards
Mike Williams

  • Write to your MP and ask?

The rules were written when the UK was a member of the EU.

Because it would be a double cost (the rebate and the cost to re-develop the systems to cope) and it is a political non issue.

Waste of government money and they have better things to spend it on from a citizens point of view. Especially for something which will be a non issue in 5 years anyway.

The passport is available for use in many non-EU countries, so why would/should they offer a discount?

    Sorry but I don't understand.

Don't you get the months added on so that the new passport goes up to August 2034?

How is it impossible to use those?  Ok maybe they can't be used to travel to EU countries but others aren't so fussed.

The UK Government no longer add months on, passports are only issued for a 10 year period (120 months)

No, your issue date is the day its created and it now expires 10 years from the issue date, they no longer add on the extra days for early renewal which would take it over 10 years from the issue date. This brings the UK inline with the majority of the world who all issue a max 10 year passport.

In principle they could have "pre-issued" passports so the start date isn't until august but then you are stuck with the 3-6 months where your old passport doesn't have enough duration on it left to enter certain countries but the new one isn't valid yet.

In 2018, when this changed, I was surprised to hear from 2 friends from 2  EU countries (Greece and Sweden), that their passports were always valid for just 5 years, not 10. They were quite shocked to hear that we  got 10 years.
