Care Home Fees

Options
I read on a gov.uk website that no one has to pay more than £86,000 in care home fees. I am creeping up to this figure in the total I have spent on my mothers savings on care (I assume this figure is the total out of savings rather than the total including pensions??

Will she REALLY not have spend more than that?

The cap has not yet been introduced. Current plan is for it to be introducted in October 2025.
The cap is a cap on the costs of personal care (e.g. nursing and personal care).
Some aspects of the service provided by a care home would not be included in the cap - i.e. accommodation, food, energy bills.

one thing to be aware of is that it is CARE costs and not all the you pay for is CARE some of it is residential costs too :

"Personal care means the residential care, nursing care and support needed, whether it’s with washing, dressing, mealtime assistance or managing health problems.

There are several aspects of the care home service that are not classed as personal care – this includes accommodation, food, energy bills, lifestyle and wellbeing and consumables"

You realise the figure relates only to personal care, not accommodation charges etc?

And it only starts being counted from October 2023.

Per link above, the entire proposal push backed to October 2025 ( for the third time!), so your mum has still a while to go.
Even then, if there has been a changed of government by then, the entire proposal could well be dropped due to scant funds/ resources at local and central government levels.

The cap is highly likely to be introduced considering there will be a change of government before October 2025 (which a cynic might say is why the Tories pushed it back to that date). So it's pretty safe to assume you will need to continue paying. Have you looked into an immediate care needs annuity? This might help give some comfort over long term care funding.

An additional wrinkle in this is the last time I heard it was only going to apply to people who went into care after this started so your mom wouldn't be included in any case.  Assuming it goes through as originally planned of course.

Aside from it not covering the “hotel” costs, this is a Conservative government plan.
To come into effect they have to a)win the election and b) go through with the plan as it stands, neither of which are looking entirely likely at the moment.  They’ve kicked down the line once already - absolutely no guarantees that it will come into place.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

We had the tax increase for it in 2021. Recently reversed. Doubt very much this will happen now.
