Office restructure

Due to a restructure my mate wasn't successful in his application for his old position (which has been renamed) and so finds himself back in as a normal team member rather than team lead.
Can he refuse this? Is there an entitlement to redundancy?
Thanks

Did the team leader role come with a different job description and extra pay?All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
How long has he worked there for?
If he’s in a union he should get on to them.I would suggest his starting point would to go back to them and ask them to explain why they consider it to be suitable alternative employment, given any differences that he identifies. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

13/14 yrs I think
Don't think their HR is much use0 -
Even if they’re not much use, he still needs to ask the question. In writing or by email, so that he’s got evidence If he needs it.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

The new role is a grade higher than he is currently. He's never been moved off the engineer grade when he was made team lead 5 yrs ago0

So was he seconded to team leader?
So he's taken a step back in job title but has been promoted to a higher grade but on less money and less benefits? Was the grading system changed as part of the restructure?
Sounds like it would be better for the friend to post themselves as not sure you've all the facts.0 -
If the new role is a higher grade then he failed to achieve this on interview he cannot claim redundancy. He might not be happy reverting to his previous post and have problems readjusting and not being in a management position. If he feels hard done by or resentful he is probably best off looking for a suitable job elsewhere using his learnt skills.1

Thank you. The new role is a grade higher than he is on so that might be the stumbling block. I guess he's not done himself any favours for not insisting on a grade increase when he was made team lead back when was promoted (got a company car, which has now been taken off him)
He's had a couple of interviews elsewhere so we'll see if anything happens0
