New roof, cash in hand?

You know that, I know that, but it was OP’s immediate assumption so hence my advice to look elsewhere. No point starting a relationship on that footing, especially for something that could foreseeably require some snagging/aftercare. I wouldn’t want to be the trader in that position (under suspicion), let alone the customer.TELLIT01 said:Requesting payment is cash doesn't automatically mean a person is dishonest. It does not automatically mean the person is dishonest, but i would say it is a fairly good indicator that someone is attempting tax evasion and that is not something any decent person should want to help facilitate.TELLIT01 said:Requesting payment is cash doesn't automatically mean a person is dishonest. How big is this roof? £5k seems extremely cheap for a complete removal, replacement, scaffolding, skip hire etc.. Do you have a written and detailed quote, or is he going to hit you with extras? No free lunch, and no free laptop

After waiting months due to bad weather etc ( which he kept us informed of), he came today to say the scaffolding will go up next week and a few days later they will start and said we dont pay him anything until after the roof is finished which is great, but here is the big ‘ BUT ‘… he has told my husband he wants paying in cash. My husband asked how this affects our guarantee but he says it wont. He is obviously doing this to fiddle the tax man, but how will this affect us? Im really worried about this as its over £5000 😢😢😢😢How is the scaffolding being paid for ?Our roof has been quoted at £4900 + £1850 for scaffolding - both liable to VAT !!

When he said he wants paying in cash, does he mean cash, or does he just mean not debit/credit card? I've had that in the past and what they actually meant was by bank transfer, not by card (which incurs charges).0

For £500 is he doing the roof to the latest standard as I seem to recall replacing over a certain percentage needs insulation upgrade and checking?0

It's £5,000, not £500. No idea if £5,000 is viable for what you suggest.BillyT57 said:For £500 is he doing the roof to the latest standard as I seem to recall replacing over a certain percentage needs insulation upgrade and checking?0 -
I'm curious, what type of new roof and how big?
You getting very little for £5000 from a builder these days!

Yes, what size ?Is the roof a 2 faced terrace roof or is it a 3 faced semi - type ?Our is 3 faces and they are looking for a similar amount - just the scaffolding is expensive....Also - probably most important - is he registered as a roofer or is he just a bog standard builder ?He needs to be member of a roofing association such as NFRC or similar
