I renewed BG in December on a fixed-can I change?

Good afternoon,

Our fixed tariff contract with BG was ending in December 2023, and watching Martin Lewis’s Tuesday show highlighted the energy tariffs a lot. Our bill were ridiculously high each month. It was £450pm for gas and electricity and we don’t cook much, are people that generally feel hot (not because of heating - just generally) so rarely had the heating on, rarely cooked too. We have a smart meter and any time I’d call asking BG to check if there was some sort of gas leak, they said no because the smart meter was correct and accurate.

Anyways, in December, I saw fixing would reduce the bills by approx £30-£40pm, so I renewed it.

Now I’m seeing a lot of email/news about energy prices being less now.

Essentially, can I do anything to be on the lower tariff? If so, how?

Many thanks :)

Plus you need to work it out on actual usage, not based on guesses of monthly payment amounts.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Since late August 2023 British Gas policy has been -

    https://www.britishgas.co.uk/energy/manage-your-energy.html

    • No exit fees - we don’t charge exit fees if you choose a new fixed tariff with us
  • Attached are the tariffs :)

  • This is the screenshots from the time I actually signed up ie few seconds before I actually pressed “confirm”

ILoveToMoveItMoveIt Do you have cheaper fix available to change to ?

https://www.britishgas.co.uk/energy/manage-your-energy.html - first link on page, I have gas with them, offered fix lighter, gas SC 22p ish instead of 31p with higher unit rate as well as latest standard 12 month fix with slightly lower standing charge.

You are using two and a half times the average amount of electricity and twenty percent more gas, you are certainly not low users, or even average users, it is well worth doing an audit of your usage.

ILoveToMoveItMoveIt  I notice you are paying by cash/card, some energy suppliers are only offering cheapest fixed tariff to customers who pay by DD.

You've signed up to a fixed tariff that has £75.00 exit fee per fuel, as was advised when you signed up to it.  As others have said though it appears British Gas will allow you to switch to another one of their fixes and waive the exit fee.

Im a habitual 'fixer' and I have switched to new British Gas tariffs a few times with no penalty in the last 12-14 months or so as rates have reduced.

I check regularly by logging in and clicking the 'switch tariff' link on the account page which shows me the unit rates and estimated costs for any tariffs I can switch to that day - Try it out, at that point, you are just viewing and there is no commitment.
