Renewing passport while on holiday

I am keen to avoid the increase in passport fee on 11 April. I am planning on using my passport shortly after that date.

Does anybody know if I could apply for a passport before the 11 April, use my current passport to go on holiday mid-April, and then post my current passport as part of my application once I am back in the UK?

    The same question was asked on another thread yesterday, but as yet not answered:

    Is it really worth running the risk for the sake of £7?

    I imagine it would work as the fee is paid when you apply online, but you'll get lots of reminder text messages demanding you post/return your current (old) passport to them, so I'd have that set up for as soon as you return.

    I've renewed mine very recently - it didn't take that long.

    But more pertinently, is your current passport valid for the trip you're making?

    They won't action your request until they receive your old passport so I don't see why it would be an issue.  When was the current passport issued and what is the expiry date?  They may be more relevant.

    @CaptainWales

    Are you travelling to somewhere that needs a period of 3 or 6 months left on it before you enter the country.

    You have 90 days to send in your passport, once you submit and pay for your application, before it gets withdrawn
