Cheaper to send a package than a large letter via Royal Mail? [Tracked, Europe]

According to the latest Royal Mail prices, it is cheaper to tracked item to Europe as a package than it is to send it as a large letter. Seems a bit counter-intuitive to me but the facts speak for themselves:

The figures seem to match those of the Click and Drop website. Worth bearing in mind if you are sending a large letter sized item to the continent - send it as a package!
